10/03/2008 MX Australia's Tamsyn Lewis won her first major athletics title today, causing a boilover to grab gold in the 800m at the World Indoor Championships. And no one was more surprised than Lewis, 29. after her win in Valencia, Spain. "I was just hoping to make the final. I did win. didn't 11" Lewis said. Mozambique's Maria Mutola missed out on a record eighth gold medal, getting boxed in like an inexperienced rookie. At 35 and running in her last indoor championships, Mutola ran a poor tactical race and let Lewis sweep past her on the inside with 300m to run. "I couldn't get around the pack from the outside, so I went on the inside," Lewis said. Lewis won the slow race in 2min 2.57sec, holding an edge of 0.09sec over Petlyuk. Mutola finished in 2:02.97. Australian pole vaulter Steve Hooker also had success, claiming a bronze medal. Hooker leaped a season-best 5.80m, behind Russian Evgeniy Lukvanenko (5.90m) and American Brad Walker (5.85m). |
